How Do Weighted Blankets Work?
Weighted blankets and clothing use a concept called deep touch pressure therapy (DTP), which refers to gentle, even pressure all over the body.
DTP is thought to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) — the counterpart to our "fight-or-flight" sympathetic nervous system. The PNS helps us calm down and plays a role in controlling many autonomic functions, such as heart rate, digestion and sleep. Activating this system is also significant in the release of serotonin, which is important for regulating mood and reducing cortisol — the stress hormone.
Weighted blankets and vests can reduce anxiety, and many parents and teachers say weighted items have significant calming effects. Plus, they come with no risk — you can use them as part of a "cozy corner" during tantrums or whenever someone has the wiggles.
